Antibiotics and its correct usage

In Mumbai and probably in other parts of India, antibiotics is commonly prescribed by doctors for common cold. There are many patients who instead of visiting their doctors, simply ask their pharmacists to give them 1 of 2 antibiotics tablets because they know it worked in the past. It is very important to understand how antibiotics works and its short term and long term effects.

Antibiotics are drugs that kill bacteria. They do not kill virus. So they are only to be used for bacterial infections and not viral infections. Since your body has both good and bad bacteria, unwanted or indiscriminate use of antibiotics will kill all bacteria that are sensitive to the particular antibiotic drug. This will cause imbalance and can lead to other issues.

If you have been prescribed antibiotics for a bacterial infection, make sure you complete the entire course. Do not stop if you start feeling better after a few days of taking medication. This is important because the bacteria that did not die will over time change and become more resistant to the antibiotic. So the antibiotic that worked this time may no longer be effective.

Lastly do not save the antibiotic for future use. Once your course is, as prescribed by the doctor is complete, please discard left over tablets as per the local laws. Do not throw medications in the basin or toilet.

Prevention is better than cure - wash your hands!

A healthy India means a more productive India. It is every citizen’s responsibility to ensure we and our loved ones are healthy. One way to ensure we do not get sick, especially from diseases that spread from person to person, is to keep our hands clean.

Many diseases are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. Keeping hands clean is a simple and most effective way to prevent ourselves and others from getting sick.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends cleaning hands in a specific way to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.

  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Washing hands are the best way to reduce number of germs. However, in situations where running water and soap is not available, use alcohol based hand sanitizers. To correctly use hand sanitizers, follow the below steps:

  • Apply the hand sanitizer to the palm of one hand.

  • Rub your hands together.

  • Make sure the product covers all surfaces of your hands and fingers and rub until your hands are dry.

Flu - A few things you need to know

What is Flu?

Iinfluenza (or flu for short) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. The two types of flu viruses, namely A and B, are responsible for most of the seasonal flu infections.

How do you know you have flu?

Flu differs from common cold in several ways. When you have flu, you will usually also have high fever (102°F to 104°F), headache, general body pains, extreme fatigue, and chest congestion. Flu lasts for 1 -2 weeks.

How to treat flu?

Rest, plenty of clear fluids, and over the counter (OTC) pain and fever reducers, will help in treatment of mild symptoms of flu. In most cases the symptoms are mild and people will recover within 2 weeks. However some people in high risk categories may develop flu related complications such as  Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections. Flu may also worsen conditions for people with pre-existing medical illness such as Asthma. Note: Please do not give OTC cough and cold medicine to children below 6 years, unless advised by you doctor.

How is flu spread?

The flu is a contagious disease that spreads from person to person. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, tiny droplets containing the flu virus are released into the air. When these droplets land on your nose, mouth, or eyes, you are infected.

You can also be infected by touching if you touch your nose, mouth, or eyes after touching objects such as remote controls, shaking hands, phones etc. contaminated by infected droplets.

How can you help prevent the spread of flu?

Here are some ways to prevent the spread of flu

  • Washing your hands frequently. (see article dated 19 Jan 2018)

  • Avoiding touching your nose, mouth or eyes with your hands.

  • Coughing and sneezing into your arm.

  • Disinfecting objects and surfaces that many people touch.

  • Eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of clear fluids.

  • Leading a healthy lifestyle and doing physical activities.

  • Getting plenty of rest or sleep.
